Three Monitor Desk 2

This desk was a redesign of the older three-monitor desk, allowing the desk to use the same snap-in mechanism as the two-monitor desk model. This desk also has more powerful speakers and a web camera on a new mount. The desk also has mounting points for the headphone/bag holder on the side of the desk.

Challenges

The desk is designed for shipping via UPS. However, the three monitors are larger than the original three-monitor desk, which makes the footprint larger, increasing shipping costs. The new speaker housing had to fit into the same monitor housing and hide the gap between the monitors; this larger footprint means the original speaker housing could not work. Overall this desk had several challenges related to the shipping issue, which affected every other aspect of the frame design.

Solutions

The Speaker housing took numerous redesigns to get to the new design to hold two speakers and a PCB inside; it has magnets on the front to keep the speaker grill in place and a groove around the housing to prevent the grill from moving. To reduce shipping costs, the entire unit was designed to be split into three pieces to be packed into a smaller box; this means the frame had to be FEA tested to withstand this new configuration. The monitor arms had to be split and tested while allowing a cable to fit thru the connections between the splits in the tubing.
